Dear Parents’ Rights in Education,
I am reaching out to share my experience with my son’s elementary school and its refusal to be transparent with parents. My child is in 4th grade, and I became aware that he attended a sexual harassment assembly with guest speakers from an LGBTQ center when he came home asking questions about the assembly. I had no idea this subject was going to be discussed because the school never informed us as parents. I emailed the principal right away and requested a list of the future assembly topics, so I could either speak to my son about them beforehand or decide if he was not ready to learn about that subject and needed to stay home. The principal denied my request. I then presented the principal with a Freedom Of Information Act Request for the list of remaining assemblies the school had scheduled and their topics. I am awaiting a reply. The refusal to provide the list of assemblies has created distrust in the school, not just from me, but from other parents as well. It also makes me wonder what else the school is hiding from parents.
